A suggestion: "tabbyBar" a lean sidebar (vs the resource hungry alternatives, however I have not deeply researched what is available).

During my typical day I am moving back and forth between six different programs, and I am always hunting along the taskbar to find where they currently sit.

I don't know if it is feasible, but it would be nice to have each open program always in its assigned place on a toolbar. So then I would know exactly where to click to swap to tabbyFile or firefox or whatever.

Even cooler would be to have your favorite programs in a list, highlighted if they are currently open, and one click would either switch (if they are open) or open them if they are closed.

Another interesting addition to this would be a visible list of Recent Documents (vs "Start | My Recent Documents |") with useful buttons such as "copy location", "open with...", so that if you just finished editing a document and needed to open it in another program you could navigate there quickly.
